Postpartum Doula

What is a Postpartum Doula?

Postpartum Doulas care for new families in the first weeks after birth providing breastfeeding assistance, general family and household support & newborn care and instruction.  Postpartum doulas are skilled and knowledgeable about the care and development of infants as well as maternal recovery and adjustment.  They provide mother care, emotional support and offer information on available resources.

Doulas are non-judgmental women with a quiet presence in the home. Postpartum doulas assist by taking care of necessary household tasks such as grocery shopping, simple meal preparation and minor household chores as well as tending to the older children.  We are there to ease the transition into motherhood, for the woman as well as the rest of the family, through individualized care, encouragement, and practical information

 What do I do?

I will 'mother the mother'.  As a non-judgmental caregiver, I will  assist the with recovery from the birth experience, allowing you to focus on the needs of the new baby.  I will help the family by demonstrating practical newborn care and support the method of feeding the mother has chosen.

I will utilize my personal experiences and professional training to provide you with a quiet, restful recovery time at home. I will offer recommendations, if asked drawing from evidence-based research.  I would like to empower mom and dad to feel strong and confident about parenting.

“...our daughter is breastfeeding up a storm, gaining half a pound a week, and smiling often.  In a word, she’s thriving and Nikki is one of the reasons why she is doing so well.  I feel very lucky to have had Nikki as a doula. She is knowledgeable, organized, reliable, caring and very passionate about her work. ”

Kathryn M.—Halifax, Nova Scotia, mother to Eva born March 2005

What I don't do

I do not provide: medical advice, maid service, babysitting or nanny service. Nor do I give my personal opinions and ideas. I don't diagnose medical conditions or take over care of the baby.  As a postpartum doula I support whatever parenting style you choose. I will assist you with your needs; making it easier for you to parent your new baby.

My Training

In order to become a certified postpartum doula I have done the following:

1.    Maintained membership with CAPPA in good standing;

2.    Attended a CAPPA approved Postpartum Doula training program;

3.    Read three books from the CAPPA Postpartum Doula required reading list;

4.    Attended and passed an infant/child CPR program through the Heart & Stroke Association;

5.    *Submitted letters of recommendation from one of 6 professionals in the field;

6.    *Passed an exam with 85% or better;

7.    *Submitted letters of recommendation from clients.

* As I am still in the process of certifying, these points have not yet been completed.

"I think Nikki makes a wonderful doula.  She is intuitive and compassionate to the needs of a pregnant woman.  She brought humour and experience to assist in  the delivery of my second son.  Nikki knew what I needed before  I did or before I could express it.  She was always at my side with great encouragement and knowledge. I would recommend Nikki to any woman."                             Twyla M. ~ Courtenay, British Columbia mother to Reed (8) & Sam (4)
