Why are doulas paid? A certified Doula has gone to great lengths to prepare herself to be an effective and knowledgeable support. Much of this has a cost to the doula, beginning with the registered training programs that include books, videos and materials, to the practical expense of meeting each clients' needs. There are travel costs as well as her own child-care costs as many of us are mothers ourselves. Being a doula means being available to the expectant family at any time, which makes it next to impossible to hold a 'normal' job with a set schedule. Paying for a certified doula ensures that you are receiving a trained professional who has undergone a long and thorough process to receive her certification. Paying a doula to be a part of your birth experience is one of the best gifts you can give yourself, whether it is your first delivery or your fourth. Labour doulas ensure your needs are met every moment of your labour and a post-partum doula provides the soothing knowledge that you have support and help when you bring the baby home. I typically work with a family for 12 hours of pre-natal sessions, 3 hours of phone support, anywhere from 8-17 hours of labour and delivery support and 4 hours of postpartum support. Average labour doula support is around 30+ hours not including travel time, session preparation, research, library & resources lending, and e-mails. A doula does it for the love of her work and the satisfaction of a positive birth experience for her clients. Doulas are passionate that any woman that wants a doula at her birth should have one, therefore our prices can vary from $1500 to volunteer doulas for low-income families. If you are concerned about the fee, do not hesitate to contact me to arrange a reduced fee based on income or a payment schedule that fits your budget. I want you to have the birth you envision and if that includes a doula, let's talk. Labour doula services $450** Post-partum doula services $325** * 10% discount for military members "She makes you feel that you can do anything!" Sonya B. - Cow Bay, Nova Scotia **Prices will increase once I have received my official certification accreditation |
